College Prep Discussion at Black Star (100 BMC Southside)

Attended by about 40 to 50 students and parents from throughout the city of Chicago, seating was at capacity. The first presenter was our Phillip Powell, a 100BMC volunteer, from Valparaiso University. He gave insights into the programs offered at that institution as well as possible career choices. The next two presenters from Xavier University were enthusiastic about the Historical Black College experience for an entering freshman and the supportive environment of Xavier University verses other institutions. The last presenter from the 100 Black Men of South Bend Indiana and a former mentee was a graduate of Harvard College. He spoke about working in the White House as a speech writer for the president, his college expenses being paid by scholarship and an RA job on campus. He also said that the only thing that separated him from friends that did not make it, was he out worked all his competition and that led to his success.
