Self Esteem (100 BMC Southside)

Today the mentors and mentees opened up the session with an icebreaker discussion about the killing of 16-year-old Derrion Albert caught on video. The talk was lively as mentees shared their thoughts and feelings about the tragedy. We covered the various outcomes that could happen when mentees find themselves in a similar scenario. One of the mentees, Terrence, shared a topic he learned in class, the human pheomenom of "Fight or Flight" when faced with a dangerous situation and applied it to the discussion.

The topic for the day was Self Esteem. We went over the various ways self esteem can either be built up or torn down. We also did an exercise where we asked each of the mentees (1) How much do you believe in yourself as a percentage, (2) What are you achieving with that percentage, (3) What could you achieve if you believed in yourself 25% more? We rounded out the discussion by identifying what morals and values are and how they play a role in determining self esteem and how we live our lives.
